By reviewing the number of wars that have broken out in history, we can conclude that war is indeed a tragic incident but also both a social reality and one of the stable elements of human history, which destroys security and peace. Security is one of the divine gifts that are considered special blessings by the Qur’an.
The holy book also regards the development of power with the aim of deterrence as the most important strategy for ensuring the security of Muslims. It also urges Muslims to identify all the elements of power and control them in order to deter the enemy from threatening and invading the Islamic society. In short, one should become strong enough to be able to deter attacks, and as Imam Ali (PBUH), the first Shia Imam, said, acquiring knowledge is the best way to become strong. The Iraqi-imposed war on Iran in the 1980s is a clear example in this regard. Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein launched an all-out invasion against Iran with the purported aim of seizing the capital Tehran in six days. But it was purely wishful thinking of him to assume that Iran would not be able to confront Iraq.
