Tehran urges UNSC ‘immediate action’ on US ‘violations of int’l peace, security’
Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday strongly condemned an aggressive US military attack on several Iranian oil tankers, stressing that the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general have a responsibility to take immediate action over “grave violations of international peace and security” by the US.
The ministry said in a statement that the US military attack on several Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday night, and the assault on Iranian commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are a continuation of Washington’s military aggression, maritime blockade and economic war against Iran, and constituted an outright violation of the UN Charter and international law.
The ministry said the US actions against Iranian commercial vessels not only represented a dangerous escalation of tensions in the region but also posed a clear threat to regional and international peace and security.
In response to the attacks on Iranian oil tankers, Iran’s Armed Forces, exercising their inherent right to self-defense, struck US military bases and facilities in Jordan, which it said continued to support US military attacks against Iran, as well as several US vessels.
The statement said Iran reaffirms its firm determination to defend its sovereignty and national interests against US aggression, stressing that Iran’s Armed Forces would not hesitate to exercise their inherent right to self-defense.
The ministry said Iran would respond decisively and appropriately to any military aggression by the enemy.
Iran’s Armed Forces on Wednesday launched an attack on a US military base in Jordan and targeted two US vessels, eight oil tankers, and 10 other ships attempting to pass through the prohibited zone of the Strait of Hormuz in response to the US attacks on Iran’s oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.
