SATBA sees 2,000 MW renewable export potential
Iran has the potential to build up to 2,000 megawatts of renewable power generation capacity for energy exports, the deputy head of technical and engineering at the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), Alireza Parandeh-Motlaq, said.
He said Iran was ready to cooperate with private-sector investors or foreign governments to build renewable power plants, but had so far received no requests.
“There is an opportunity for us to build wind and solar power plants along the borders to export electricity, but it has not yet been realized,” he said, adding that infrastructure development would also be necessary in some cases.
New solar projects come online
Meanwhile, Iran has prepared 300 MW of new solar power capacity for operation as part of efforts to expand its renewable power generation capacity, IRNA reported.
The projects are part of the country’s target of reaching 7,000 MW of renewable power capacity by the middle of the Persian calendar current year (began on March 21, 2026).
The 300 MW of new capacity, developed by Pasargad Energy Development Company, is located in the provinces of North Khorasan, Semnan and Tehran.
Of the new capacity, a 50 MW project in Tehran Province is due to be officially inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of government officials.
Separately, an 80 MW solar power plant was inaugurated in Yazd on Monday. The project increased the province’s total operational solar power capacity to 574 MW, further strengthening Yazd’s position as a leading province in solar energy in Iran.
The groundbreaking ceremony for nine 3 MW solar power plants also began on Monday in Khatam County, Yazd Province, as part of efforts to expand renewable energy generation and increase the province’s solar power capacity.
A 3 MW solar power plant in Garmsar was also inaugurated on Monday, alongside the symbolic start of operations for 146 MW of solar projects in Semnan Province.
In Kordestan Province, the first private-sector solar power plant was inaugurated in Saqqez. The 3 MW facility, operated by Rozan Abnous Company, was launched as part of efforts to provide stable electricity and reduce imbalances in the province’s power grid, ILNA reported.
The project was developed with private-sector support and cooperation from the National Development Fund and SATBA, with Bank Tejarat also participating in the project.
Iran’s installed renewable power capacity has recently reached 6,000 MW, with more than 80% coming from solar power plants, Ali Qaseminejad, head of the solar power development group at SATBA, said.
The government has set a target of installing 30,000 MW of renewable energy capacity within the next two years to help reduce daily power shortages and improve the long-term stability of electricity supplies.
Qaseminejad said the Seventh Development Plan calls for the addition of 12,000 MW of renewable energy capacity and that the government was seeking to move closer to that target by March 2027.
The agency’s deputy investment director, Jafar Mohammadnezhad Sigaroudi, has said the government’s target of reaching 7,000 MW by the end of the summer remained unchanged despite constraints on imported equipment.
