South Pars Gas output hits record 723 mcm/d, CEO says

South Pars Gas and Oil Company (SPGC) set a new record in gas production from the South Pars field, the company’s CEO, Touraj Dehqani, announced on Sunday during a meeting of the company’s board of directors.
The production of rich gas – natural gas with high hydrocarbon content – from the shared South Pars field with Qatar has increased “to 723 million cubic meters per day,” Dehqani said, IRNA reported.
He added that the increase continues a step-by-step expansion of South Pars’ rich gas capacity under the current administration, and is the result of collective efforts across the company, particularly among staff working on the offshore gas platforms.
South Pars, the world’s largest gas field, is responsible for 70% of Iran’s natural gas supply and 40% of the feedstock needed in the country’s gasoline production sector. It covers 40 offshore drilling rigs, hundreds of wells, and thousands of kilometers of underwater pipelines across 28 development phases.
In early March, Iran awarded some $17 billion worth of contracts to domestic companies for a major pressure-boosting project in South Pars to extend the lifespan of the field by 20 years.
The investment followed expert warnings that declining pressure could cause a sharp drop in output of the field in the coming years.
Dehqani said around 7 million cubic meters of additional production capacity had been added over the past month, with precise planning underway to further expand capacity in the coming weeks.
He also highlighted ongoing and upcoming development projects, including the start of drilling at the Belal gas field, the commencement of development activities at the North Pars field with the signing of a jacket construction contract, and preparations for development at the Farzad B field, where the jacket is ready for shipment and installation.
Other initiatives mentioned included accelerating the development of South Pars Phase 11 with a 100% increase in production, commissioning four wells under the Infill plan, more than doubling the number of active drilling rigs, and planning to finalize operations at the Kish gas field.
