Embrace tranquility, timeless beauty of natural heritage in Lorestan Province

The Director General of the Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Organization of Lorestan Province announced the registration and identification of 69 waterfalls across the province, noting that some of these waterfalls are seasonal while others are permanent.
Ata Hasanpour told ISNA that Bisheh is one of the seventy waterfalls scattered throughout the province.
He further explained that this waterfall is entirely permanent, with its water flow never ceasing. The height of Bisheh Waterfall is 52 meters, and the width of its crest varies depending on the volume of water, ranging from 20 to 40 meters.
He added that directly above this waterfall runs a nationwide railway line, which has been recognized and registered as a World Heritage site.
Hassanpour emphasized that Bisheh Waterfall currently attracts the highest concentration of tourists in the province; during the Nowruz holidays, the number of visitors to this waterfall sometimes matches that of the historic Falak-ol-Aflak Castle.
He stated, “We have successfully registered and identified 69 waterfalls in Lorestan Province, many of which, like Bisheh Waterfall, are permanent, while the remainder are seasonal, situated along the Sezar River.”
Hassanpour also noted the ecological and tourism significance of these waterfalls, stating that they contribute not only to the natural beauty of Lorestan but also to the preservation of local ecosystems by supporting diverse plant and animal species native to the Zagros Mountains.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to develop sustainable tourism infrastructures around these sites to balance visitor access with conservation needs, ensuring the protection of these natural treasures for future generations.
He further explained that according to a report prepared by hydrologist experts, the Sezar River is one of the four raging rivers in the world, and during the 1990s, four countries managed to organize rafting competitions on this river, extending all the way to the dam’s endpoint.
These initiatives, Hassanpour added, have positioned Lorestan as a prominent destination for both nature-based tourism and adventure sports, helping to boost the local economy while promoting environmental awareness.
Lorestan’s diverse natural environment, featuring mountains, rivers, forests, and waterfalls, plays a vital role in the province’s tourism sector. The region’s rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes attract visitors throughout the year, eager to explore outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, and ecotourism. Beyond waterfalls, Lorestan Province is home to protected areas and national parks that offer unique opportunities to experience Iran’s natural heritage.
Tourism development in Lorestan focuses on integrating cultural heritage with natural attractions to create a well-rounded experience for travelers. Local authorities have been investing in infrastructure improvements, including eco-lodges, visitor centers, and guided tour services, to enhance accessibility while maintaining environmental sustainability. This approach encourages responsible tourism that supports local communities economically without compromising the integrity of natural sites.
As Lorestan Province continues to gain recognition as a destination for nature and adventure tourism, it contributes significantly to regional economic growth and cultural preservation, offering both domestic and international visitors unforgettable experiences rooted in the province’s distinctive landscape and heritage.
