Ex-Spurs fullback Aurier set to join Persepolis

Former Tottenham Hotspur and PSG fullback Serge Aurier is closing in on a deal to join Persian Gulf Pro League club Persepolis.
Aurier, 32, who has bean without a team since parting ways with Turkish heavyweight Galatasaray in January 2024, joined the Tehran Reds’ training camp in Erzurum, Turkey, on Saturday to undergo medical tests ahead of signing the contract.
Having made his senior debut with Lens in Ligue 1 in 2009, the Ivorian right-back went on to bag five goals and 14 assists in 81 appearances for PSG, lifting the French top-flight trophy twice, before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2017.
He found the net on eight occasions, while providing teammates with 17 assists, in 110 games in the Spurs shirt, reaching the UEFA Champions League final in the 2018/19 season, where Tottenham was beaten 2-0 by Liverpool.
Aurier’s career has been affected by lengthy injury spells in recent years, as he managed to make only 69 appearances across four seasons with Villarreal, Nottingham Forest, and Galatasaray.
Capped 93 times for Ivory Coast, Aurier has four international goals under his belt and was part of the national team during the title-winning runs at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 and 2023.
