Dialogue is the only way to resolve these disputes and unfounded historical claims. Bilateral talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia or the inclusion of additional parties, such as Iran and Russia, could guarantee Azerbaijan’s access to Nakhchivan through existing routes, be it via Armenian or Iranian territory.
This access does not imply Azerbaijani ownership of these corridors. As emphasized in the treaty that ended the war between the two countries over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan is guaranteed unhindered access to Nakhchivan without any mention of establishing a new corridor under its control.
Azerbaijan’s insistence on altering the historical and international border, regardless of its motives or backing, is irrelevant. What matters is the potential impact of pressing ahead with these claims and any attempts to create the Zangezur corridor. Such actions will ignite tensions and could plunge the region into another conflict. Iran has made its stance clear: it will not tolerate such a project.
