Araghchi says Iran waiting official response from US on Hormuz plan
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran has conveyed its seven-point proposal to the US to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and is awaiting an official response from Washington, expected to be delivered through intermediaries on Tuesday.
In an interview with IRIB on Tuesday before leaving New York, Araghchi said the latest discussions with the Qatari mediator focused on possible ways to meet Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
“Our position is clear, and the only issue under discussion is the Strait of Hormuz. The reopening of the Strait is contingent upon the fulfillment of a set of conditions that we have conveyed to the other side. I ask that no attention be paid to the speculation or deliberate media campaigns being carried out by some foreign media outlets,” he said.
He said Iran’s proposals have been conveyed to the US side, after which Washington’s final response would be relayed to Tehran, probably on Tuesday.
“Our proposal, which has become known as the seven-point plan, was conveyed to the Americans through a Qatari mediator. Despite the remarks made by the US president, I said that we are waiting for an official response from the United States through the mediators,” he noted.
Araghchi said Iran has demonstrated that despite the pressures and conflicts imposed on it, it remained prepared to pursue diplomacy while also maintaining its military readiness.
The remarks come as US President Donald Trump has denied any compromise in position regarding Iran in the form of sanctions relief and the release of frozen funds.
“This is untrue. I offered them NOTHING,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, responding to an Axios report that cited US officials as saying that he was willing to give Iran sanctions relief and release Iranian frozen funds in return for “concrete” Iranian steps regarding the nuclear program.
Last week, discussions were held in New York between Araghchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
As a precondition for ending its blockade, Iran is demanding a seven-day ceasefire across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, where Hezbollah resistance movement has been battling Israeli forces.
It is also demanding the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad, the lifting of sanctions on its oil sector, and an end to the US naval blockade.
