Araghchi demands accountability over US use of Japan’s airbase to attack Iran
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Japanese people should hold their government accountable for their country’s “participation in US crimes” after a report revealed that the US military assets in Japan were used in operations against Iran.
“The peace-loving people of Japan should ask their government to be held accountable for the crimes committed by the United States,” Araghchi told Japan’s Kyodo News, arguing that Tokyo bears responsibility for the use of military facilities and capabilities by the US army against Iran.
The top diplomat specifically highlighted reports that US Air Force F-16 fighter jets deployed from Misawa Airbase in Japan’s Aomori Prefecture were transferred to the Middle East for strikes on Iran.
The minister said it proves that the US military bases in Japan are not used solely for domestic defense, but rather to support wider “aggressive policies”.
During its aggression against Iran that broke out in late February, the US military used its bases in several regional countries to launch attacks against Iran. Several military bases in other countries, including in Europe, were also used for strikes on Iran.
