Iran approach is to resolve issues through negotiations: Pezeshkian
‘US will achieve nothing via economic pressure’
President Masoud Pezeshkian said the government’s approach is to reach understanding and resolve issues through interaction and negotiations, while maintaining a firm position against economic pressure.
“Our approach is understanding and resolving issues through interaction and negotiation, but at the same time, we have stood firm against economic pressure as we have done so far, and we will continue to stand firm,” Pezeshkian said during a meeting at the Central Bank of Iran.
The Tuesday night meeting came after the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent laid out plans for the “economic asphyxiation” of Iran, warning of dire consequences for countries that do not join the campaign.
During the meeting, the president reviewed the latest monetary, foreign-exchange and financial indicators with Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati and a group of prominent university economists.
He underlined that the United States would achieve nothing with its new round of sanctions.
“With the measures that the government’s economic sectors have foreseen, America will not achieve anything with economic pressure at this stage, just as it was unable to achieve anything in the war,” Pezeshkian said.
“Just as America was unable to accomplish anything during the war, despite the bravery of the armed forces and the support and backing of the people, it will not be able to accomplish anything through economic pressure at this stage either,” he said.
Economists at the meeting presented their views and proposals on how to confront trade barriers and manage the new economic conditions, as well as on financial and budgetary policies, monetary and foreign-exchange policies, trade and economic exchanges, management of enterprises and other related issues.
During a separate meeting on Wednesday, the Iranian president said that Iran has demonstrated its readiness and ability to fight when necessary, but stressed that war is not always the answer and that the country could overcome challenges through “prudence and thought.”
“The people showed that if necessary, they will fight, they can and they will not back down; but war is not always the solution. We can get through this path with prudence and thought,” Pezeshkian said.
Pezeshkian described the recent memorandum of understanding signed with the US in Pakistan as a source of pride for the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying global assessments had identified Iran as the winner of the confrontation.
“In all global analyses, Iran has been recognized as the winner of this field,” he said.
He said assessments around the world had predicted that Iran should have collapsed several times, but that the country had remained standing.
“All the analyses in the world were that Iran should have fallen several times, but we have stood firm with strength and, through solidarity, empathy and authority, we will continue on the path,” he said.
