Borujerd’s historic mosques representing cultural legacy
There are 20 historical mosques in Borujerd, a city in Lorestan Province, according to the head of the city’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department.
Mehdi Goudarzi told ISNA that the most prominent among them is the Jaame (Grand) Mosque of Borujerd, which is the oldest historical mosque in the western region of Iran. This structure is one of the earliest mosques built in Iran, constructed in the second to third century AH in the heart of one of the historic neighborhoods called Do Dangeh.
Architectural significance
He further noted, “The architecture of the mosque is considered a masterpiece of Iranian historical architecture, incorporating Islamic and ancient Iranian (Sassanid) architectural features. One of the most attractive sections of the mosque is its nine-step wooden pulpit, skillfully crafted with carvings that display the date of 10608 AH.”
He added that Imam Mosque, with an area of over 7,000 square meters, is regarded as the largest historical mosque in the western part of Iran. It features four large main ivans and was originally built with a dual purpose as both a mosque and a school, currently serving as a theological seminary for religious students.
Prospects for global recognition
Goudarzi mentioned that, should obstacles be removed and with the cooperation of the Endowments and Charity Affairs Organization, these two mosques could be included in the list of Iranian mosques nominated for global registration.
He also stated that the Amir al-Mo’menin and Rangineh mosques are located within the old districts of Borujerd.
He continued, “The presence of an old urban fabric covering nearly 280 hectares, along with significant structures such as the Jaame Mosque in the city center, which has a history of over a thousand years, attests to Borujerd’s urban importance and significance.”
He emphasized that the old city fabric includes a considerable number of valuable structures such as mosques, shrines, old houses, baths, the bazaar complex, and water reservoirs.
Historical importance
Borujerd itself is a city with a rich history, known for its cultural and architectural heritage, strategic location, and its role as a hub of trade and pilgrimage routes throughout centuries. Its historical roots trace back over a thousand years, making it one of the oldest and most significant cities in the Lorestan Province, with a legacy that continues to influence regional culture and history today.
