Journey of Brig. Gen. Hossein Khalili, a pioneer pilot
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army, especially its Air Force, has played a key role in shaping the Islamic Revolution and standing firm during the eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s. The Air Force’s declaration of loyalty to Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 was a game changer, helping to bring down the Pahlavi regime. As Iraq invaded, brave airmen, including Brigadier General Hossein Khalili, stepped up to defend Iran, thwarting enemy advances despite initial disarray in the military. Khalili, a standout fighter pilot with over 2,000 incident-free flight hours, has continued to give back as a university professor and senior advisor in the Air Force.
