Tehran, Moscow usher in new era of relations

The long-awaited “comprehensive strategic partnership” treaty between Iran and Russia was inked yesterday in Moscow by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Several officials from both sides have regarded the signing of the comprehensive joint cooperation document as the most critical achievement of Pezeshkian’s visit to the Russian capital, highlighting specific sections of its provisions.
According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, the joint accord is essentially an updated version of an agreement that Tehran established with Moscow in the late 1990s. This agreement has formed the basis for mutual relations and principles of cooperation between Tehran and Moscow since 2002 and remains binding on both parties. Therefore, it was necessary to draft a new agreement with greater detail and specificity, considering the developments and the expansion of bilateral relations.
The spokesman indicated that the new document had received approval from both countries since early summer 2024, and the parties were awaiting the right moment for its signing.
