Student protests lambasting the US support for Israel’s policies have gained momentum in recent days, spreading like wildfire across numerous campuses. However, law enforcement cracked down on the students with an iron fist, making dozens of arrests. Iran Daily sat down for an interview Hadi Khosrow-Shahin, a US affairs expert, to share his take on pro-Palestinian rallies in American universities.
Iran Daily: How do we make sense of the recent student protests within American society? Are they simply a backlash against the pro-Israel stance or do they signify a deeper-rooted issue?
Khosrow-Shahin: From my vantage point, these protests transcend mere foreign policy grievances, specifically the US administration’s unwavering support for Israel and its crimes in Gaza. Ever since 2016, the onset of Donald Trump’s presidency ushered in a new era of political and social strife within the nation. Historically, the United States leaned toward an elite-driven consensus, fostering theoretical harmony on key foreign and domestic matters, even between the Republicans and Democrats. However, Trump’s ascent to power, which broke the traditional bipartisan mold of nomination the presidential election, ignited a fresh wave of debates, termed by famous American author Francis Fukuyama as identity conflicts
