Iran begins building Karoun nuclear power plant
Iran has started to build the Karoun nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said.
Mohammad Eslami told reporters after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the government has signed contracts with domestic companies to equip the power plant, IFP reported.
He said water and electricity have been supplied as requirements for the activities of the 300-megawatt Karoun nuclear power plant.
He also added a 24-megawatt power facility is under construction for a desalination plant.
The nuclear power plant, which is designed by domestic experts and is to be equipped with indigenous technologies, is being constructed in an area of around 50 hectares near the Karoun River.
Earlier on December 3, 2020, Eslami said that the plant is of medium-scale standard, and the preliminary phase will include environmental and infrastructural studies.
The construction of the 300 MW site was estimated to cost $1.5 billion to $2 billion, and take around seven years’ time, he asserted, according to AEOI.
The power plant is of the PWR type, with close to 4% fuel feed. The project design has already been registered with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
